"KHAN RAN NAM BO"
An inspiring story worth discovering
(Traditional Southern Scarf of Vietnamese)

Khăn rằn – the name:
People in the Mekong Delta and Cambodia areas have discovered the beauty and value of “Khăn rằn”, making it a beloved item daily. The images of “Khăn rằn” and “chiếc áo bà ba” have become a source of inspiration for every Vietnamese, stirring pride and fondness within their hearts.
The intricate pattern of small squares woven together in contrasting white and black colours symbolizes the beauty in the details of life. This is why the Vietnamese refer to it as “khăn rằn”.

Khăn rằn – the origin
Khăn rằn has a fascinating origin, with its characteristic square stripes. It is believed to have come from the Khmer Hindu beliefs and worship of the preservation God Vishnu. The Khmer people have woven this scarf to symbolize respect and reverence for the God Vishnu, who always protects humans and rides on the seven-headed Naga. The checkered pattern on the scarf resembles the countless scales on the skin of the seven-headed Naga God snake, and it is said that having it by your side brings luck and peace. The Krama scarf is not just a piece of clothing but a symbol of protection and good fortune.
The Khmer community has significantly contributed to Vietnam’s prosperity throughout history. As a result, the “khăn rằn” scarf has become widely used among other ethnic groups in the Mekong Delta due to its convenience and versatility. Today, this scarf is known as “khăn rằn Nam bộ” or “khăn rằn miền Tây” and serves as a symbol of unity and collaboration among the Vietnamese people.

Khăn rằn – formation and development
Through the generations, the plaid scarf known as “Khăn rằn Nam Bộ” has been kept intact as a symbol of traditional culture. Despite the introduction of machine-woven scarves in the early 2000s, checkered patterns still hold a unique position in preserving this heritage. Along with the conventional black and white colours, new scarves now come in various delicate shades such as pink-white, black-red, and blue-pink, catering to the diverse tastes of consumers. The new “khăn rằn” also comes in different sizes, thicker weaves, and stylish braided ends, making them a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.

Khăn rằn – highlights
Creating a “Khăn rằn” is a time-consuming process that involves spinning yarn into small tufts, dyeing them, and drying them. The result is a stunning piece of art that tells a story of hard work and dedication. Next comes starching the yarn, winding it onto shuttles and bringing it to the loom, weaving it into the significant fabric, and finally cutting it into individual pieces (people in the profession called it “tearing the scarf”).
During the process, the starching (sizing powder taken from rice flour) is considered the most important because it helps the fabric become stiffer and makes it easier to weave the scarf. When weaving is finished, the scarf will have moderate hardness and be easy to fold, but when used and washed many times, the starch layer will away, and the scarf will become soft. That is one of the unique points of “khăn rằn”.
“Khăn rằn Nam Bộ” has a rectangular shape, usually 1.2m long, about 40 to 50cm wide, decorated with white-black or sometimes white-brown square patterns. In the past, it was often used to beautify festival outfits, but later, the scarf became closer to working people when it was widely used in labour and production.
Men usually wrap “khăn rằn” around their foreheads to prevent sweat from falling into their eyes.
Women often wear it around their necks, with two flaps in front of their chest to wipe sweat.
In the South, cultural interference has gradually turned “khăn rằn” into an item used by Khmer, Kinh, Chinese, and Champa people. For the Kinh, “khăn rằn” along with the “áo bà ba” and “nón lá” become a trio that is almost always accompanied. The usage of “khăn rằn” is also very diverse. Not only do they avoid the sun, protect from rain, and wipe away sweat, but they are also a favourite for young girls to be charming.
Older women often wear red-white striped scarves on their heads. Unmarried young women often choose a brighter blue-white striped scarf to wear around their necks or hanging loosely over their shoulders.
Over time, “khăn rằn” has also been transformed into handbags, used in fashion and handbook covers to add vitality to craft villages while bringing this cultural beauty internationally.
